Front end file management (Uploads) module: always 403 forbidden errors?

Post by Traill »

Hi everyone

Since upgrading I've been inundated with 403 access forbidden errors with everything to do with my Uploads module (found in Content > "File (Uploads Module)". If I try editing or creating something from the control panel, I'll get a 403 error. Similarly, in the actual webpages that I generated with this module, if I browse my webpage and try to access the links to files, I'll get a 403 error too. I've had a fiddle with umask setting, but that doesn't free the 403 forbidden errors.

This problem has only surfaced since I upgraded from 1.1.0. to 1.1.1. I'm now using 1.1.2. I think this has to do with some folder or file permission change since I upgraded, because it was fine before.  Can anyone advise as to what folders I need to CHMOD or change their settings so I can get my uploads module back? I tried uninstalling the module (version was 1.3.0 beta 3), removing it all and starting again, by reinstalling, and now I can't even create a category without a 403 access forbidden error. In fact, although the module is there, I cannot change or do anything with it because upon doing so I always get a 403 access forbidden error.  :'( :'(

Upon reinstalling, I had this message too, which might be why something is now being allowed??

Warning - The proper behaviour of this module depends on numerous php configuration variables. These include (but are not limited to), php's memory_limit, safe_mode, file_uploads, uploads_max_filesize, and max_execution_time. These variables may need adjustment for this module to work properly on your site. It is advised that you work with your system administrator or host provider to tune these settings for your requirements.

Hope someone can help me, I've searched for ages in all the docs and forums too, to no avail :(
I'm really at a loss and I don't know what else to do....
Many many thanks!

After hours and hours of tinkering around, I've finally given up, I don't know what to do... This module is now completely unusable now because of this 403 error which blights everything I click on concerned with this module. It's so frustrating because everything else to do with this CMS is working so well, it's just excellent.

If anyone can help out there with these permissions issues, please help me; I am willing to pay a donation.

When creating a category in the server path name do not put a slash before i.e. mynewfolder

Putting any slashes in the rest of the name i.e. mynewfolder/subfolder I have not tried.

The folder uploads which should be in your webserver root should be chmod to 777 after you create the new folder above also chmod that to 777 so you should then be able to upload files.

Depending upon how you are accessing the files within you may also have to change the ownerships as when it creates the new folder it is set to apache and also for group ownership.

Hope that helps.

Have you looked in Users & Groups > Group Permissions > admin to make sure all are ticked?...
