ImageGallery v0.2.0.3 released. You can see it in action here. The release package can be found here

The look of the gallery is up to you ! Everything is made with smarty templates with an admin backend. No need to edit files with an editor !!!

Features:

Although the module is almost what I need, I noticed a few problems I thought I'd let you know about

a)  Had to increase the maximum memory allowed for a script in my php.ini file to like 64mb before it would work
b)  I continually had problems with the script timing out after 60 seconds until all of the thunbnails were generated
      so some kind of an external utility to generate thumbnails would definately help.

I unzipped and uploaded the directory of files to modules/ but ImageGallery does not show up in admin panel! How to install this thing maybe someone can help out?

You have to install it (Extensions -> Modules) and set persmisssions for it (Users & Groups -> Group Permissions)

The trick was to put a blank index.html file in the directory.
