how to make cssmenu.tpl they way i woud like it

i would like to change the font and a few other things in the cssmenu.tpl

which i have been using the Navigation: CSSMenu - Vertical css file, but i only can get it so far, i can change the background colors and font color, but i can't get the font size i would like or the font family

where do i place the tags at?

The menu templates get the font styles from the primary style sheet (i.e. "Layout: Left sidebar + 1 column").  If you want to apply different font styles to the menu only, try adding the font styles you want to the id's "#primary-nav a" and "#primary-nav li, #primary-nav li.menuparent."
