Form Builder And Search Form Styling?

If I add a class in my css for certain form parts, how do I define my classes in the form tags?

For example, if I wanted the text box a certain length for the search form, and I made a class that did this, how would the {search} tag add the class to the search box??

It's been bothering me for a really long time =(
