Active Menu Items not showing properly

I have modified my stylesheets for the theme of my website.  I have horizontal and vertical menu's with it that show all the time.  For some reason after making the stylesheet and menu look the way I want the active menu items no longer show in a different color as I had thought they would.  Can somebody help me out, what have I changed?
