Show News article's Parent Category?

Is there a way to show the Parent category of a News item? When I'm listing articles in Summary view, I don't want to show the sub category, just the main parent category (I only have two levels of categories at the moment). With a structure like this:

Apples
-> Granny Smith
-> Golden Delicious
Oranges
-> Navel
-> Tangerine
Bananas
etc.

I want to show:
Category: Apple (not Granny Smith)

I know to set "Use * after the name to show children." when displaying all of the Summaries, I just can't figure out how to grab the Category of the $node.prevdepth (if that's even the way to approach this).

My install is a little old (relies on some deprecated modules, an upgrade is planned), so I'm working with News 2.14.1
