Help! how does an average user get started?

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

Help! how does an average user get started?

Post by petitpaul »

I am not a computer specialist.  :-\
I thought cms was a piece of software I could download to my PC in order to create and manage my own homepage.  I have downloaded the software, but cannot find any 'install.exe' file or something of the like.
According to the downloadable documentation, I have to go and register to the site of gforge.org first, create an account, do something with unix names (what is a unix name anyway) and make a choice between CVS and something else.  What are these abbreviations? What is this procedure for? It looks like I am creating a new homepage (hence the unixname), but I am not sure, and in any case I don't need that, I already have a homepage via my provider that I want to fill with content.

In short: how does a novice get started?  Is there a manual somewhere in plain English ???

Hi,

Sure there is:

(notice the Documentation link at the top of this site)

In short: upload the files to your webspace and run the installation script by accessing your site with a webbrowser.

CMSms is not a software you install on your computer like MS Word. It is more a software you install on your hosting (webspace) provider.
Just imagine you are Google and you install Writely on your provider's computer.

And of course : RTFM, it is well made.
