Image upload field in SelfReg

I've got the selfreg module setup with various different fields most of which are type text. However I would like the ability for a new user to upload an image / avatar when they fill in the form for the first time.

For some reason you can only upload the image when you have verified yourself via your email after registering.

Can anyone help with getting this feature working?
