Help needed with FULL UPGRADE from CMSMS 1.9.4.3 > 10.1

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

Help needed with FULL UPGRADE from CMSMS 1.9.4.3 > 10.1

Post by naturelab »

I need to upgrade a site from CMSMS 1.9.4.3 > 10.1.

I am extremely nervous about this and could really use some 'hand-holding' / Idiot-proof step by step guide.

I have read the instructions here ( http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/2011/10/An ... mple-1-10/ )

BUT

I still have a few unresolved issues.

1) Step c, in the instructions above - " c: Upgrade all modules to the latest available version."

I CAN'T do this, because the module manager is broken ( which is the reason for upgrade -
I get

Code: Select all

SOAP Problem (http://modules.cmsmadesimple.org/soap.php?module=ModuleRepository): Response not of type text/xml
)

2) The file structure in 1.10 is different to 1.9.4.3 ( see screenshot ). In particular, the images folder location.

I have backed up the current site locally.
Should I completely delete all the files on the server, then upload all the 1.10 files ?
Then add my images to the correct directory ?
Then add my third party modules via FTP ?

Surely this is going to break horribly !

Thanks

Follow the steps listed here: http://docs.cmsmadesimple.org/upgrading/old-versions
Don't delete any files or folders at this point.
Make sure you have also a database backup!
Upload the CMSMS 1.10.3 files, not 1.10.1.
Check if all is working before upgrading to the latest 1.11 release.

Note: usually this should be done on a site duplicate, which would be moved back in place after a successful upgrade.

Thanks for the quick reply Jo.

I am still not getting it ! feel like I am going round in circles here.
On this page ( http://docs.cmsmadesimple.org/upgrading/old-versions )...

The first instruction is :-
Upgrade CMSMS to 1.10.3

Upgrade all third party modules through the Module Manager in the CMSMS Admin panel

Necessary follow-up actions and known issues

Some Admin themes (including the "default" theme) no longer work in CMSMS 1.11+, before upgrading change your admin theme to NCleanGrey
Before proceeding to upgrade to 1.11 read this post from Calguy.
His modules require PHP5.3+!
1) I CANT upgrade through the module manager, because it doesn't work !
2) I have set the admin theme to NCleanGrey
3) What next ?

Did you upgrade to 1.10.3 already?
naturelab wrote:1) I CANT upgrade through the module manager, because it doesn't work !
You should be able to upgrade the modules AFTER the CMSMS upgrade , but even if for some reason you still can't use Module Manager, you can always upload them manually, after getting the latest version of each from the forge. I don't think you will need to though, not after the 1.10.3 upgrade.

NO, haven't upgraded.

I have my existing site files on the server ( 1.9.4.3 ) and
my 1.10.3 files ( downloaded from the forge sitting locally on my mac )

What is the next step ? This is what I am unsure of

Upload and overwrite ?
Delete remote files and upload the new files ?
Something else ?

If you have a backup of both files and database already: upload and overwrite!
Point your browser to <cmsmadesimple folder>/install/upgrade.php and fire up the upgrade.

One last thing ( sorry ) this might sound idiotic to you.

When I upload and overwrite, surely

Code: Select all

 uploads/images
on my existing site will be overwritten. At present, I have the gallery module installed, so

Code: Select all

 uploads/images/Gallery
will get overwritten.

Do I simply copy again this after I have uploaded he 1.10.3 files ?

Also, 1.10.3 does not have a

Code: Select all

 /images
folder.

Does that make sense ?

If there are two matching file/directory names, the uploaded one will overwrite the existing one, all else will be left untouched. There is no risk of disappearing files or folders that are not part of the upgrade process. That is why I told you to NOT delete the existing files. This is the same behavior as in any file copying process, in almost every Operating System I know of.

OK, I tried it, but it didn't work.
I copied all the files up.

Went through the upgrade process, got to step 6 ( screenshot attached ) but I couldn't get to step 7.

When I looked at the site, I had nothing. Completely Blank screen.

I quit the browser / emptied browser cache. Refreshed / restarted.

Still a blank screen. No HTML at all.
Same with /admin.

Any ideas ?

Ok. You'll have to reverse the site to the backup (as you said you had done one). Post here your system info (which actually should have been the 1st thing I should have asked for).

Besides that:
  • - Never do the upgrades on the production site (as I hinted on a previous post);
  • - I seem to remember that I told you at some point (it seems like you had another thread about this problem) you could upgrade the modules manually, by uploading them and overwriting the original files (previous to the CMSMS upgrade). That might also work;
  • - Avoid if possible uploading files by ftp. Use an alternative method if possible;
  • - If that doesn't help you need to do some debugging;
  • - Additionally you may need to rename the folders of non core modules (by appending an underscore to the original name for instance), one at the time, and test if the error disappears each time (meaning there could be a misbehaving module);
  • - There is no foolproof process to upgrading (there are too many variables involved...);
If you lack the experience to do the upgrade yourself, you may consider asking for professional help, on the commercial help forum.
Usually an upgrade is relatively easy and straightforward, but there are exceptions...

Sorry for late reply.
Thanks for your continued to support on this.

I restored the database & site files to a previous backup, thing running as they were.

I did read your post ( re: not working on a production site ), but I don't know how to make a viable working clone of the site. I will ask my hosting company for help with that.

In terms of downloading the individual modules from the forge - Where would I download just the "Module manager" for CMSMS 1.9.4.3, apart from just downloading the core files and extracting from there ?

Renaming folders > Yeah I read about this method. I would definitely need to work on a backup for this, because the likely culprit is probably the AdvancedContent module ( and all of the pages use this )

Thanks

Unless specifically told to do so, DON'T UPGRADE CORE MODULES SEPARATELY: you may create a bigger problem than the one you are trying to solve. It doesn't even make sense, if you think that «the likely culprit is probably the AdvancedContent module», that is the module you should start to upgrade, not Module Manager.
Again, post System Info please.

Sorry ( again ) Jo.

I understand now. Upload the AdvancedContent module manualy separately first, then do full upgrade of CMSMS.

I thought you were talking about uploading core modules separately. ( my mistake )

Ok, try to upgrade AdvancedContent separately then. All 3rd party modules have recent versions (and you have PHP 5.3.28 which is good)... except for nuSOAP, which after upgrading the core, shouldn't be needed no more, but shouldn't cause any difficulty either, afaik.
