Products Module Hierarchy Links

Does anybody know how to resolve a hierarchy template report issue where the current hierarchy item has a count greater than one, but no products assigned to it, and the template still provides a link to the empty hierarchy level?

The count is greater than 1 because the item has one or more sub-hierarchy levels but does not have any products assigned. The link shows empty contents in the summary template.

Ideally, I'd like to just show the description and count on hierarchy items that do not have products assigned.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Can't find any template variables that allow to test for that.
