Products - attributes

Hi,

in Products module in product detail there is an option to add "attribute sets".

If I have e-shop, I create product and attribute set(s), what does the attribute set mean exactly? How to use that, or maybe better, what´s the real meaning of this function.

I understood that as a product variants (eg. I have a T-shirt as a product and by those attributes I can set that I have "red M", "blue M", "blue L", where I only set new price if neccesary etc. But I´m not sure if I understood it well (it seems it should have another meaning).
