Display an icon on top of the vertical menu.

Hi all,

I have changed the template of the web site, and set an icon just above the vertical menu.
But, is'it possible to display this icon () only when the vertical menu contains element ?

So, calling a kind of "count" fonction somewhere to check if the vertical menu contains element, then display the ..

How can i do it ?
