Problem with listmodules

Problem with listmodules

Hi All,
I am learning to write modules by following the tutorials in the CMS Made Simple Development Cookbook. The author says you can simply produce your module files and ftp them into the modules directory and they should appear when you click Extensions->Modules, but they don't.
My CMS is version 1.10.3. Does this no longer support this method of adding modules or have I missed something more fundamental?
