[solved] Upgrade From Version 1.0.8

I installed cmsms quite a few years ago now and I am still running version 1.0.8.

I was wondering if anybody can help or recommend the best way to go about upgrading from this version to the most recent version.

After reading through the documentation for the upgrade procedure it looks like it would be best to do it in stages which would be very long winded and therefore I hoped there might be an alternative?

Any assistance on this will be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I think i'll just stick with version 1.0.8 then, it seems far too complicated to upgrade.

Yeah, well I have never attempted an upgrade like this before, so taking backups of all files and databases, then installing the next version, ironing out any problems or conflicts, then doing it all again for next version.

It'll be easier to just stick with the version I'm on, however old it may be.

I thought most things nowadays would just have an "Upgrade" button to click on and it'd all be done automatically.

That's exactly what my boss always wants: a button that does anything she thinks of.
To her disappointment I still did not manage to program that button

It would be best to upgrade as soon as possible to prevent security problems. Old versions are no longer supported and usually have several vulnerabilities. Also you could get in problems because old versions are not compatible with current php-versions.
To prevent a big and complicated upgrade, always keep your website up-to-date to the latest version of cmsms and its modules.

That is 5 years old, so if you don't care about something for 5 years how can you expect a simple button push, paniless upgrade?

Let's compare it with a non virtual example, if you dont care about your car for 5 years do you really think when you drive to a car mechanic that you will hear "Hey it's all cool, your car just needs a paniless, quick oil change"?

If you are not familiar with all the upgrading process, try getting a professional and do not risk the fact that your website has a vulnerability risk.

Yes I do realise it is from 2007, that was when I installed it.

It's not that I didn't care about it it's that I did not realise it was necessary to upgrade if everything was working OK, there is a saying "If it isn't broke, don't fix it".

It's not really fair to just pluck random irrelevant objects out of thin air in order to make a point, because you can make any point you like if you pick the right object.

So using your logic let's compare it with a non virtual example, if you have a door key to unlock your door that does the job and works ok, would you continue to take it for a service every year to check everything is ok, or would you just continue to use it year after year until it stopped unlocking your door?

My point is I didn't realise I needed to upgrade if everything was working ok.

Maybe instead of ranting about what I should of done, you could of put that energy into being helpful and assisting me in fixing the problem.

I did not rant but tried to explain it in non tech language??
But nvm doesn't matter.

Regarding my help, if you go again to link that Jos posted above and read Author info, hmm well if that isn't help then dunno, should i maybe offer free upgrading for anyone that asks?

Nice example, it's just that maybe your key won't stop unlocking your door, but rather that uninvited visitors will be able to unlock your door too because your key type isn't that safe anymore

To help you: Follow the steps that uniqu3 took in his blog article. If you encounter an error, try to find it in the forum, else put it here and we'll try to help.

You can also ask one of us to do the update for you, but that won't be for free I guess

Maybe comparing a key is a bad example, but that was my point, comparing a car is also a bad example, we are talking about software here after all.

From these posts I now understand that there maybe security issues if I was to stick with the old version, again something I wasn't aware of until now. So it looks like I am going to attempt the upgrade, however daunting I may find it.

I believe "Step 1" would be to take a backup of the existing version. I have never done a backup before either.

Would using the 'Cpanel Backup Wizard' be sufficient for this task?

I guess that will only backup your files.

Don't forget to backup the database too!

Ok, well I have already hit a couple of stumbling blocks on the back up stage.

Firstly the cmsms documentation for 'How to properly and completely backup your installation of CMS Made Simple' just says "database export (several times and several versions). Also note database prefix." It doesn't really explain how to do this though. On the same page there is also mention of "MySql Dump". Is that different from a database export or database backup?

The Cpanel backup wizard says:

The following are backed up and included in a zip file for your convenience:
Home Directory
MySQL Databases
Email forwarders configuration
Email filters configuration

Secondly the cmsms documentation also says to backup "list of modules that you have installed, plus any custom settings. This is easy to backup by saving the html page after you view the "Modules" page of Admin."

However I cannot see which modules I have installed because when I go into module manager I get SOAP error regarding the module repository, which was the thing that prompted me to look at upgrading in the first place.
