Time outs when adding content

I did what I thought was a clean install of CMS Made Simple yesterday, but I've been having problems as I've been playing with it using the content manager. CMS Made Simple seems to be running very slow on my server, while other CMS on the same account/box run fine (I have an instance of phpwcms that has been alright).

Specifically I got the following error when I tried to add a new piece of content in the content management area:

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/{site directory data}/cmsmadesimple_0.9.2/lib/adodb/adodb.inc.php on line 872

However, I got a similar but DIFFERENT error when I did it previously (same timeout, but in like line 1132 and a different inc.php file).

Does anyone know why I might be experiencing all these problems? I'm running PHP 4.3.10, and MySQL 4.02 I believe (4.x where x < .1). If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate the help... I searched the forums but came up dry.
