Forum change?

Post by Ted »

Ok, question for everyone...

phpBB is annoying me. The constant critical updates and poor upgrade path are taking their toll of me. It also lacking several key featuers that don't come standard are frustrating (because they need to be put back in after I upgrade). Needless to say, it's not pleasant...

So, I've been searching around for a new forum to use.

Simple Machines is a very nice candidate. I've installed it at http://forumtest.cmsmadesimple.org and ran the upgrade procedure. It was seemless.

So, please take a look at it. Log in, look around, post some responses, get a good feel for it. After that, respond back here on what you think, either by answering the poll or giving a detailed reponse (or both) If you like it like I do, I'll do a full conversion later this week. However, it's your community too, so if you don't like it, I'll survive.

Please let me know.

Thanks!

no way to get back to the main CMS site. Presumably that's fixable. Otherwise, seems fine :)

Yeah, the template would need to dressing up...

Only 1 no so far and no explanation why. Not very convincing.

Mostly for feature set. Both punbb and phorum don't have a few features that people are used to around here in them by default, and that goes back to not wanting to make upgrading and maintenance a big deal...

Seeing as no one is really concerned about the move, I'll do it today. I'll take the forum down, migrate everything to simple machines and turn it back on. I just want to make sure of a few things before I do that.

If it's bullshit, why didn't you say something 2 freakin days ago?

This is the kind of stuff that pisses me off to no end.  No one has anything to say until it's done.  Oh well, tough.

Forum response is very good here, and I like the new look quite a bit.
Nice upgrade.
Look for more CMS help in #cms on Freenode IRC

The new forum is good, I think. No problems with response.
However, I had a problem when trying to create this response. With IE 6 a runtime error occured when I selected the reply textarea.  I was not able to proceed. With Opera it is no problem.
