/\ top of page link not working

i've been putting a link to take visitors back to the top of the page, only problem is it's not working on a lot of my pages... WTHeck if you know what i mean, talk about frustrating, some do some don't...
well i just found out why ...
some of my templates i have been putting the {metadata} tag in, mostly newer ones older ones don't have them, started after hearing "it keeps image links from breaking" well it breaks these links, always takes me back to my home page... if i take the tag out it works fine.. any ideas as to how to get around this....
