Building a Site from Scratch

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

Building a Site from Scratch

Post by fr0z3ng33k »

Does anyone know the steps on how to build a site from scratch for CMSMS?

I am a newb and all I do is maintain 1 site through CMSMS but I'm curious how to setup a site from the beginning so I can try to create one on my own.

By scratch I mean downloading the CMSMS files, how to setup or where to setup the pages & accounts to get access to CMSMS files and how to designate the url to get access to the admin side. Thanks all!

Well, we have this thing called 'documentation', you can find it under support in the menu bar above.

After a few clicks you'll find all the information you need:

Don't be scared to use a search function, google, or just some logic sense, sometimes it is not so difficult to find what you need ;)

I found documentation, I bought the cookbook and have used the forums. The issue isn't finding the information it's finding the right information. It doesn't help when certain links take you to an "older" version of CMSMS material and that none of the documentation is updated. That's the "difficult" part. Finding information relevant to todays patch (1.9x)

Thank you for the reply though, but I highly recommend updated tutorials and documentation for everyone to make life easier. We all don't start using CMSMS with knowledge of this stuff, some start from scratch =).

Show me what needs to be updated or what is old and I will fix it.

From scratch...

I just installed a new version for the first time in a long time, so I thought I'd share...

I literally used this document for step-by-step instructions and it was all relevant (except I noticed the link to the latest release was broken): http://wiki.cmsmadesimple.org/index.php ... ck_Install

To get you started...

Do you have hosting already? If so, you should have easy access to FTP your files. I use Dreamweaver, but many hosting services have web-based FTP capabilities. You can also use something like filezilla.

Have you downloaded the zipped file for the latest release? Go to http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/downloads/ for the latest.

You can either upload the zipped file and then unzip on the server or unzip locally and then upload individually - depends on what you are using and your permissions, etc...

Then go to www.yoursite.blah/install and you will get a screen that looks something like the attached.

You can also go to www.yoursite.blah to see the site skeleton.

If you are a newbie, I suggest installing with example content (one of the options as you move through the install file).

Keep the handbook open as you go through the steps. In the end, it will have you change some file permissions and delete some files as needed.

Hopefully this helps getting you started....
