Problem after upgrade from 1.6.x to 1.9.4.1

I have just applied an upgrade to 1.9.4.1 to a site that was working in French and English. Now the site is only available in English and I have lost some icons from the layout. Something has changed in the path,

Old style was >
http://www.perfect-it.fr/index.php/fr_FR/index.php

Now the style is

http://www.perfect-it.fr/index.php//index.php

the fr_FR (or en_EN) has disappeared.

Can anyone help and point me in the right direction as to where I can resolve the problem ?

were you running MLE version by any chance? Or was this regular core?

It does use MLE which appears to be no longer supported so I will have to find an alternative bi-lingual solution

I reinstalled the backup and am now trying to solve my email problem (see separate topic) which I didn't have whilst 1.9.4.1 was running
