Options for integrated forum

Hi - I have been searching the forum and also looking through the modules/add-ons but could really do with some advice please.

I am looking to convert and existing dreamweaver site to CMSMS but also want to add a forum. I use phpbb and simplemachines forums for other sites not running CMSMS. However, I would like to create members only pages and would like to integrate with the forum software.

Is it better to use an independant software like phpbb or a forum module? also, is it possible to link the two so that members only have to log in once?
