smarty error after template change - not seen after browser refresh

I have seen this a few times now and don't know what causing it.

When modifying a template on the forum module (but have seen this on other modules), the first time you view the public page you get some smarty errors such as:

If I hit the fresh button, I never see the error again. Everything works fine.

I've seen a good few others report this issue on the forum, but cannot find a solution.

CMSMS is a slightly older version 1.6.3 (I know it need upgrading the web site is massive and its big job) and the Forum is version 0.9.4 (latest version)

Any ideas?

PS, although on this occasion it is happening with the forum module, I don't believe it is a forum module error which is why I put it in the product support board


UPDATE: I find that the error only appears the first time the revised template is viewed. View the page on a different PC and its does not appear.

Also modify anything on CMSMS such as a global content block (even a simple change such as adding a fullstop to some text) that appears on the forum page, you also get the error.

We don't support CMSMS 1.6.3.
Please upgrade your site, then see if the problem persists.
