harcore SEO. External VS Internal links

Hi there,
I'm thinking of SEO and I'm wondering which Linking is especially better for Google.
On a client page there are many Keywords which are linked to a certain Article.
Now they are linked mostly internally, but is it maybe better for Google to link them to each other with extrnal Links ?
What do u think and why ?
