Updates to news items not saved?

Greetings everyone,

I am working on a recent install of CMSms (Version 1.7.1) with the news module enabled.

With the News module installed and enabled, I went to "Content, News" and opened a news item.  I edited the news article and changed some text in the Content box.  I saved the article (Submitted the my changes).  CMSms returned me to the initial listing screen with an "Article successfully updated" status message.

When I review the news item for my changes, they are not present, viewing through either the administrator interface of via the public site.

The site is hosted under an Hostgator "Hatchling" account, fwiw.

Any thoughts as to why news items are not being updated?
