Advices for use of module products/cataloger or custom module

Post by cmaunoury »

Hi all,

I am tracking forum discussions about this topic but could not really find "my" solution.
I am developping a website for a film production company and I have one of my menus that go like this:

PRODUCTIONS -> PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT
                    -> PROJECT #1  -> synopsis
                                            -> cast
                                            -> pictures
                                            -> trailer
                                            -> downloads
                    -> PROJECT #2  -> synopsis
                                            -> cast
                                            -> pictures
                                            -> trailer
                                            -> downloads

etc. So the part with the projects is fine that way, it's normal content pages, so that the client can add or not the content he wishes according to the production status of each project.

Now, I wanted to set up a special module for the "PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT" part, where clicking on this link would bring one to a list of basic entries (kind of a developped summary template) with a picture, name of director, writer, budget, expected completion date, etc. and then there would be a "more info" link that would bring to a complete content page with more details about each project in development. That would not mean too much, since at some point, it would seem more logical to create a new project menu.

I am only on local, so I am sorry I cannot showcase it (I only have a graphic example here : http://colin.maunoury.free.fr/o2la/test.html, it does not navigate but maybe it tells better what I have in mind. The first and second menu level are on the top javascript menu and the third level is displayed on the bottom and of course appears only if there is content in it).

I assumed the best solution was to use Cataloger or Products and tweak them for my use, but Cataloger seems to work with full content pages as far as I figured it out and I cannot find a way to bypass the "price", "weight", etc. basic attributes in Products.

I also thought of doing my own module with CTL Module Maker, but I cannot catch its logic and I am too basic (read "absolutely not") a programmer to find any readable example. (Any basic tutorial for beginners/dummies on CTL ModuleMaker?).

If you have any advices about how to better handle this, I would be happy to have them. and I am sure many CMSMS users would also be interested in the topic, as it would open a way for a sort of universal projects presentation module.

Hope I explained myself quite clearly...

Thanks,

Colin

Give the Company Directory a look, it can be easily suited for what you describe.

If I am understanding:
Now, I wanted to set up a special module for the "PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT" part, where clicking on this link would bring one to a list of basic entries (kind of a developed summary template) with a picture, name of director, writer, budget, expected completion date, etc. and then there would be a "more info" link that would bring to a complete content page with more details about each project in development. I think it will do just what you want. I have a basic example I can message you if you think that will work.
