anyone tell me what this is
{global_content name='revs-test'}
it showed up in global content containing what appeared to be a java script
I junked it immediately, should've copied the code I know - however - any ideas.

{global_content name='footer'} is calling the a global content block (GCB) it is a page under the "Content" menu.

I'm using GCB's to wrap the code to display swf banners from my ad server,
the revs test GCB showed up in the list of GCBs with the Tag above
I didn't insert it, I don't know where it came from, the content of the GCB was in Javascript format, I junked it immedeately thinking it was a hack, which I can only presume it was, I should have copied and pasted the contents somewhere but my reflex action was quicker than my thought process. I can't find that particular GCB smarty tag in any of my pages or templates, quite baffling.

I doubt it was a hack, I haven't heard of any hacks that put stuff in the database (too much effort) and unless you deleted a reference to it in your templates it probably wasn't actively being called otherwise you would have smarty errors on your page.
If you are curious what is was you can look at a database backup and pull it from there. But my guess is it was a test script from someone who help setup the site.
