GlobalContentBlocks query - help!

Post by kendy »

Hi

I have picked up the support of a clients web which uses CMS but am a little unclear as to how the GlobalContentBlocks work, and how I make a change to these without affecting the whole site....there is a very clear note saying NOT to edit these by the previous designer, but nothing to say how to should the need arise.

All I want to do is amend an image - sounds simple right!?

I've uploaded the image with the same name so I didn't have to mess around with the Global Content section that references it, but unfortunately the image size is different and therefore it looks as though I nee to make some kind of adjustment.

So in summary - what will these globalcontent blocks affect if I make a change to these - are there specific files that I should be aware of..?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Kendy

Hello,

as you can read there :
http://wiki.cmsmadesimple.org/index.php ... ent_Blocks
GCB are a way to put a block of HTML somewhere in a page template. Say the same footer as a BCG.

CMSms doesn't enforce any webdesign practice. You can be "evil tables" or "divCSS angel" or even render .txt or whatever, it is not CMSms making it, it is your templates.

So what you want (how it should look...) and how to do it (templates, CSS, GCB...) is really about you and your way. The "previous designer" had his own and (s)he is the only person on Earth to know it ; follow it or make your own, there is no CMSms imposed one.

Pierre is dead on, but will offer another answer as well.

When you login to the admin area, do you see 'global content blocks' in the drop down menu under 'content'?

You can open up the appropriate global content block and edit as you see fit.

Hi

Thanks to both of you for your replies- I will take a look at this in more depth - specifically the templates to see whether I can pinpoint the issue.

On the downside, it does look as though the previous designer has done something 'odd' with these GlobalContentBlocks as making a change to just the image name in one of these has totally messed up the layout of the webpages..!?  Even the restored version does not appear to have restored correctly either..!?  Even more odd...  :(

Oh joy..

Anyway - thanks for the advice  :)

Follow the image paths : in /uploads or somewhere from your CSS (where paths are relative to the CSS URL according to the CSS spec). There may be some file dependency in the setup you have picked up (as opposed to "everything in the database and well restored").

I agree with matterhornpat : do simple things, one at a time, to be able to roll back and discover. And it will teach you CMSms templating.
