Have you checked the fasthosts FAQ or Help 
To use custom .htaccess is a very common question for most hosting providers. Can you see the file in the file system or can can't you upload and change it? Do you get any errors? Are changes not taking effect? What is your .htaccess looking like after all?
Please be more precise when asking questions, especially when you are referring to your servers configuration via htaccess.
