Access db record from new page

Is there any way of accessing other data within the db, core or module, when on the 'add content' page?

Example: set up the template in such a way that when adding new content there is a dropdown menu of available data such as  frontend users or uploaded videos.

In fact is there any way of adding data to a page other than a text field or a WYSIWYG box?
