Top menu together with Side menu

hi all, i'm yet another noob asking a no doubt basic question - any help please?

I want to use a combination of the css horizontal menu and the vertical side menu as follows:
the css top menu shows all levels - thats fine, as per examples.
but on click of a menu item, I want the vertical menu on the left column to show from level 1 to n, ONLY for that particular menu stream.

at the moment if I configure the vertical menu to start at level 1, then all level 1 items are displayed, but I only want the particular level 1 to n, of the clicked item displayed.

I hope this is sort of clear, thanks - any help appreciated.

Have you looked at any of the default templates, like combining cssmenu top and simple nav side menu using some parameters...
