Examples of Large Sites

Post by jcocking »

I am considering CMS made simple for a company.  I was asked for examples of large sites that are using the tool, both from a technical perspective (how many pages can it handle?) to

I know this is dependent on hardware, but are there any stories, articles or examples of large complex CMS made simple websites.  Are there any performance studies or recommendations for HW that I should be aware of.

thank you

First thing, what's your definition of a 'large' website.... the word 'large' is subjective.

You should also realize that CMS Made Simple is not an enterprise website tool.  It is not designed to be that.  It works best on small-ish websites (dozens to hundreds of pages).  We have realistic limit of about 6000 pages in the content hierarchy.

Also, the requrements and performance depend on a number of things:
  a) Your hardware and network configuration
  b) Your internet pipe
  c) Your software configuration (how apache is configured, mysel, etc, etc).
  d) What kind of information you will be serving
  e) The efficiency of the addon modules you will be using
  f) How much dynamic data, and interactivity your site will use.
  g) The amount of traffic you receive
  h) The phase of the moon, and state of the tide.

It's hard to compare one website with another..... even comparing the 'ford' website to the 'honda' website wouldn't really be fair.

Totally understand the list of exclusions due to environment.

My main question was focused on software limitations.  A few follow up questions:
  • When you mention a content hierarchy limitation of 6000 pages, are there any sub limitations within that limit?  # of pages within a grouping?
  • What is the primary driver of the page limitations?

the limitation of about 6000 pages has nothing to do with the database.... that's just a realistic performance limitation when listing the content (particularly when everything is expanded).... there's no limit on the number of levels you can have, or the number of child elements inside a level.... it's just when the total number of 'nodes' nears 6000, under most environments it gets slow, and unmanagable.

Hello jeff,

pay attention to the ergonomy of the Content->Pages screen. It may not match your content hierarchy if the tree is too flat or you work with everything always expanded.
