problem with PHP5 or host?

Hi,

my clients host has upgraded their server to PHP5 & is now saying the hosted site is using excessive MYSQL requests & has suspended the website.  They have suggested using another CMS, or at least remove the stats module (which I will do to get the site back up live).

The site was performing perfectly prior to upgrade.  I cannot override the php.ini settings the memory limit is 32M.  The site was upgraded to CMS 1.4.1 prior to this problem.  It has several modules including - album, calender, news, printing, search & statistics.

This is what they told my client & on contacting the host I received no further info - "They have examined the problem further and advise that our web page is affecting all clients on that server as when content is extracted from the data base the way the page is designed leaves the data base open which is causing a 30 fold slow down of the site. "

Any ideas on problem?  Is it the host overcrowding or a CMS problem?

Honestly, that is a pretty loudsy host. While there can certainly be better handling of the database connection with CMSMS, in most cases, it should not be a problem.

But in all honestly, in this day and age, for a web host not to give its user shell access, which I am assuming since you can't even change your INI settings, that is pretty lame.

Try not to use overly crowded hosts and most low cost companies.  A lot of the host changing to php5 do not have it set up ideally. I've run into problems with 1and1, Godaddy, NetSol, earthlink, IXwebhost, and sometimes midPhase/anhosting. This isn't a list of who is bad, but just some that I feel do not have the best environment for most CMS.

at the bottom of every generated page CMSms add
Monitor your modules' SQL consumption with it : try uninstalling the unused ones.

Thanks for your help, have ended up removing stats module & host & client now happy.  (client already had host & not willing to move)

use a external tool lke google analytics/histats to do the job, much better
