User experience and the installion process

Post by stopsatgreen »

Having performed a fresh install of 1.5 Beta, I've noticed how the installation process is becoming more information heavy, and thus daunting to the casual user. Compare the installation of CMSMS with, for example Wordpress; Wordpress presents the user only with the required information, and no more.

I wonder if it would not make more sense to hide the tests which the user's system passes, and only show the requirements which are not met, and perhaps also show a checkbox early on in the process to show verbose output for the users who require it. This would go a long way to streamlining the process, until it can be looked at properly for future versions.

unfortunately we are not going to re-redeisgn the installer now when we've already got the first beta out.

OK. I think it should be considered for future versions, however; having tried out quite a few CMS installers recently, CMSMS definitely presents much, much more information than the others. Hmmm... perhaps I should put together a comparison...

Perhaps it could be an option to have a verbose install, or not.
