[solved] front end user + custom content: the basics?

hello -- basically i need to have a page which password protected behind a single user account.

i've just installed the custom content + front end user management modules.

my problem is that i don't know what to do with them! i've looked at the help files and documentation but can't quite figure out how to even create a group or user. the former requires an xml file import and i don't know how to go about it. also, i don't know what any of the fields mean (for instance: 'user name regualr expression', etc...)

any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
