listing children

I'm trying to use this menu template:

to display the children of a particular page. It works fine on the top level items. If I set it to the alias of menu item 4, it gives me the pages corresponding to 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, etc. But when I try to get the children for menu item 5.5, I get nothing. Just the Pages tags, rather than the pages 5.5.1, 5.5.2, 5.5.3, 5.5.4

Any thoughts? There was another menu template on that page, that seemed to claim to do the same thing and I couldn't get that one to work at all, but they were written by the same guy.
