Left column navigation and download designs: Newbie Question

Post by sumu »

Hi,

making my way through my 1st installation I am wondering about the navigation in the standard design:

When I see the templates
Left simple navigation + 1 column
CSS menu left + 1 column etc

I am simply missing the navigation that is displayed in the admin /pages section.
Instead there is breadcrumbs in the top and previous/next page in the bottom
The left column is either empty

How do I get the vertical navigation to display in the left column? Right now I see only "News" in the Left simple navigation + 1 column.

Another question:
Browsing through the downloadable design contributions, I save one of them (andreas01) as an xml file. How do I apply such a theme?

Thanks a lot!

Well here I answer it myself:

Download the Menu Manager xml file and install it.
Et voila: There is the menu on the left.

Just the 2nd part -  importing a design is still open.

No button for importing a theme is seen anywhere....

Sumu,

In your admin panel:

-> Layout -> Theme Manager -> Import tab

Hi Michel,

since I do not have any Theme Manager under Layout, I assume that it is a module or extension that I can download and install (although I see some php files under cms/modules/ThemeManager)
So I went to the download section , got the ThemeManager-1.0.5.xml file and tried to import it.

But I got an error message saying
'Error parsing XML file. Please make sure you are uploading a .xml file and not a .tar.gz or zip file'.

Is there an other way of activating/installing that module?

Thanks!

Sumu,

The ThemeManager is a default install. You seem to have it as you say that you can see the /modules/ThemeManager.

Go in Admin Panel -> Extensions -> Modules
The ThemeManager module should be listed.
Check its Status: If not "Installed" install it by clicking "install" under the "Action" column.

If it is installed that means that you do not have the right permission level to manage themes.

Go to -> Users & Groups -> Group Permissions
Select the Admin group
On the next screen, make sure that the "Manage Themes" is checked.

If none of this is accurate to your problem, then you'll need to re-install the module as you did. As the .XML file doesn't work, you can download the ZIP or TAR file of the module. Please check the Developer Guide to understand how to do this -- it's simple

BTW, this guide is full of useful information!  ;)

[Solved] Re: Left column navigation and download designs: Newbie Question

Post by sumu »

Thanks, Michel!

I remember that I had difficulties uploading the files, because the server connection dropped sometimes.
That's why the Theme Manager wasn't even on the server. I uploaded it, and it showed in the Modules ready to install.

Thanks again!
