Anyone installed eAccelerator?

Post by dtism »

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had experience of installing eAccelerator, I use dreamhost and therefore I have shell access. But I was wondering if the install needed root permissions or for the Apache service to be restarted. Nothing about it is mentioned in the install instructions.

Ta,

Doug.

You'll need to make an install, you'll need to edit your php.ini file if it's php5, and you'll definitely need to restart apache. If you have a shared account, you won't be able to install it. If you have a vps or a dedicated, you'll be able to.

I'll tell you... I used to be all gung ho about php accelerators, but I've tried both eaccelerator and xcache and both seem to run fine for a while, but then they both crash apache with segmentation faults. I've since gotten rid of them. I'm running php5.1.x now, and I've heard that xcache runs better with php5.2, but if you do install either one and your site hangs, definitely check the apache error log for segmentation faults.

I have shared hosting so it looks like I won't be able to try it.

Maybe I'll try the static content type hacks to speed things up.

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.
