Required disc space

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

Required disc space

Post by meisterflexer »

Hi,
To plan a fresh installation, I was wondering what amount of hard disc space people's cmsms directories need on average!?
How much, e.g. for a simple site with a few different pages and some additional modules installed?

  Thank you,
  flexer.

CMSms comes with a lot of "external" software like adodb lite, smarty, xajax, scriptaculous, FCKEditor,PHPMailer and some other. That's the price for not reinventing the wheel.

Currently there are a lot of translations for admin and modules too (more than 20). I've tried it - the zip file will be 1 MB smaller (and faster) if you delete unused translations. If you need not every module you can delete it too.

But there's a project for you :) - please look here

http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/projects/cmsmsrepack/

There you will found a smaller redux edition.

for a default installation, i'd put the absolute minimum disk space requirement at 10mb, with 20-50mb recommended:

a regular "defualt" installation of cmsms 1.04 (including all those third party components mentioned by cyberman) will chew up about 8.5 megs of disk space (in your web space); and some of that will be removed once you delete the installation files after you've installed it.. but that room should still be available for later upgrades.

removing all language support except english from 1.04 will drop that to about 5 megs. just removing the languages does not affect any core functionality except for that language support (which can be restored by simply replacing the originally excluded language files).

the redux package linked above does use less disk space on the server, but at the expense of some removed features. on the other side, that same project has a 'loaded' version with more functionality than exists in the standard core, and that of course uses more disk space. read the information that accompanies them for more information on what's removed or added from those packages.

plus: disk space will be consumed by your own content: the graphics and other files used or linked from in your templates and content, as well as any extra modules, plugins, templates, etc. that you add to the system. cmsms will also use some disk space to hold temporary files.

the database that cmsms uses also uses disk space -- depending on your host, that space may or may not be included in your web space quota or may be limited separately. figure up to a meg or two to start, plus a little room to grow later on, for your database.
