Views and CCK

Post by giggler »

While I still think CMSMS is the easiest to use (especially the menu system), I recently revisited Drupal and Joomla just to keep up with what's going on with the different cms since there are always different requirement for projects. I don't believe I would want to touch Joomla again even with the new 1.5 out. However, a couple of things I found for Drupal that I thought was awesome and thought if CMSMS had this, that would be a killer.  It's the Content Construction Kit used along side with Views. The CCK allows you to create pretty much any content type and fields to create the form you need to build the content (from dropdown, to image upload, to selection box, to text box), then Views let's you specify ways to present this data the way you want to and have it filtered the way you want to.

This is in no way saying to go and use Drupal, actually they have lots of modules, but supposedly each time a module is loaded, it put a call to the db which I think will use up a lot of server resource. This is just an observation that these two modules really allows you to build almost anything and would love to see CMSMS go in that direction.

In some ways, this is very close to the news module "Field Definition". If this "Field Definition" option was for any page you want to create with more "Type" option like dropdown etc, then that would be way cool... OR use content block but allow for different fields and not just text area.

At the moment I´m using CMS ms and Drupal depending on the project. Concerning Drupal I really love the CCK and Views modules. Mostly I don´t need any other modules for serving dynamic content, I simply use these two modules for everything (except forms).

Reading the roadmap and some translations in the german forum, something similar will come in the future for CMS ms, starting with the upcoming system for different content types in 2.0.
