What htaccess for pretty urls and url filtering?

I can set up the config.php file fine to show pretty urls and I dont want a file extension but just a /. Is this the best way?

The only real trouble I am having is the .htaccess files. What is the definitive code to use as there are so many ways floating around.

at the end of the Installation guide there is ONE link to the Optional Settings chapter which has information about sane URLs beautifying and filtering.
