OT: small open source CRM/Accounting software?

Post by tamlyn »

I am a self employed web designer working on various projects for a bunch of different clients. So far I've been keeping track of billing in a spreadsheet and keeping track of todo's and that in my head but it's just getting too much.

So what I need is some software, preferably PHP+MySQL based, that will allow me to keep track of my clients, what they want done and how much they owe me. Some way for my clients to log in and update todo lists would be a bonus. I don't want a monster of a thing like Compiere or SugarCRM cos I just wouldn't know where to start with that.

Anyone have any ideas?

PS Ted, shouldn't there be a 'Lounge' type forum for non-project related stuff like this?

when you find something, let me know. i'm looking too.

sureinvoice and phpbms are the closest things i've found so far, but they aren't quite what i need. perhaps they'll work for you?

phpbms... http://kreotek.com/products/phpbms/

From SureInvoice website:
Designed primarily for service oriented businesses SureInvoice is the right tool for the job to track billable hours, non-billable hours and one time or recurring expenses for customer accounts.
Now that sounds like exactly what I'm looking for but unfortunately I don;t think they're quite there yet. It doesn't have much of a user community either (averaging about 0.6 posts per day in the forums) and practically no documentation. The latest release is nearly a year old and not very good however I'm about to give the SVN version a go.

"Small" is not the term that comes to my mind when I think of vTiger - but then it's a great CRM. Are you sure you need a CRM or would a project-management-tool do the same thing? I am using a time-tool to track my time and a simple excel spreadsheet to keep track of everything else. I have tried various tools but they are much to complicated and steal a lot of time for creating projects, etc. and they do not report much more than my excel spreadsheet does. ;o)

A few years ago our 2 businesses had the same issue.  We implemented SugarCRM, but had a hard time getting everyone up to speed with the software.  Too many features.

We then set about developing one in-house and it worked well.  A year ago, we started moving towards delivering software as a hosted service and have have just recently made the sales tracking tool publicly available.

There's a free version, which is not limited on features, but rather on # of sales tracked (50) and document storage size.  Also it's limited to a single user.  It will never expire.  There's also a full featured paid version $15/mth/user.
