I just made a news post, and when checking the site found the summary links to my news items have stopped working. This is
CMS Made Simple 1.1.2 "Savaii
All has been working fine for a couple of months. News Module is Version 2.3.0.2
The error message in IE7 is
This error (HTTP 406 Not Acceptable) means that Internet Explorer was able to receive information from the website you visited, but the information was not in a format that Internet Explorer can display.
Firefox does not display the pages either.
To summarise. The news page is there. The Summary page is active. But when I click on [More] or the Summary Hyperlink, I get the error.
I have modified the summary templates and have put back stock standard default summarry templates. No change.
I guess I should reinstall the module, BUT if I uninstall and reinstall, will I lose all the current posts... there are fifty or sixty of them so I do not want to do a repost.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Andrew

Looks like your server changed something.
Talk to them, looks like they put in some kind of url filtering or something
but you really should upgrade.

Thanks, but shouldn't be the server, have two other sites on same server that do not have the problem.
I've noticed that I'm a bit behind on the versions. How long am I looking at to upgrade... ballpark figure... not having read anything here...
and am I right that I'll lose the records if I just reinstall the module?

Re: News Summaries stop working
Well..... you have to do a backup first (files and database) that'll take an hour or two
Then you have to download the new version of CMS Made Simple (10 minutes if youre lucky)
Then analyze all of the modules you have installed make sure that you can upgrade all of these modules and
that there won't be any incompatibilities
Then you have to ftp up all of the files and hope you don't mess that up....
(I've seen this take the better part of a day, don't ask....
crappy webhost (and it's a major telco) and I'm grumpy about it)
but lets say an average of an hour
Then run the upgrade routine /install/upgrade (lets say that takes 10 minutes, but that's being generous)
Then deal with your modules (that could take time if you didn't do enough research first).
Then remove your install directory
(again, this can take forever, I'm grumpy).
In all, your first upgrade is probably about 4 hours..... when you get experienced it's shorter.

Deep breath... well, here goes
Sounds like anything IT, think of a time, double it and add a number between 1 and ten
Ps like your random image script, it's cool.

OK, upgrade went like a treat. We now have the latest of everything. And situation has not changed. So question remains, can I remove and reinstall the news module, but keep my data? Any strategies, anyone?

Okay, so now you've upgraded and everything else is okay.... so we have to check some other things.
Are you using pretty urls?
if so, internal pretty urls or some mod_rewrite stuff?
are you absolutely sure that your other sites are on the exact same server? if so, are they configured similarly?
do you have a link?

Re: News Summaries stop working
Hi, and thankyou.
No pretty URLs.
Link is http://202.60.89.114/~scotsch1/index.php?page=NewsList
If you go to http://202.60.89.114/~nyyamorg/index.php you will see another site.
Although the stuff under
http://www.nyyam.org/index.php?page=sa-synod-calendar-2 is called a calendar
it is actually the news module. The site owner uses it to paste items to let them drop off over time.
You will see that the summaries work there.
BTW, I had a look in MYSQL... I'm a SQL guy so I'm way way out in a foreign land, but the summary and detail fields all seem to match up in the database table.

SOLVED!! (big relief!) Re: News Summaries stop working

Took out [ number="35" summarytemplate="sample" dateformat="%d-%m-%Y" ]
All works!!!!!.
Got it. Took out the date on the other news page on that site.
The other site I referenced you to doesn't have the date in there as we have removed the date display from the templates as she does not want to show date. Seems like you were right about the server changing something, as the date format has been like that from the beginning.
Calguy, thanks VERY much for your support!
