ready-made windows test server with cmsms 1.2.2 preinstalled.
i have pre-installed cmsms 1.2.2 in uniform server for windows (similar to xampp) and packaged it up for distribution.
run the installer (self-extracting RAR*); it extracts to c:\uniform server\ -- run the start batch that's in that directory and that's it; the uniform server admin page loads up in your browser, and links/info for the cmsms install (installed to http://localhost/) are right at the top. run the stop batch and the servers shut down. delete that folder and it's gone.
this is suitable for having a local install on your windows pc for testing, development, trying out modules, hacking the code, etc.. it is NOT intended to be used to serve a live site in a production environment. it should also be possible to copy the directory to a flash drive to have a portable test server.
any interest? download it via rapidshare (10.9mb)
(* some windows zip utilities have problems with empty directories, which are present; RAR does not have that problem, but not everybody has WinRAR, so a self-extractor was used to make sure it gets extracted properly. is also a much smaller download than it would have been as a zip file)

Kermit..... sounds cool, good effort.... though I won't use it (I have an allergy to windows). I'm sure lots of people will get good use out of this.

i don't like it either, but dealing with microsoft's garbage is what pays the bills around here.calguy1000 wrote: Kermit..... sounds cool, good effort.... though I won't use it (I have an allergy to windows). I'm sure lots of people will get good use out of this.
i suspect that most of those who have the initiative to install linux would also have it when it comes to setting up a cms. although packaging up cmsms for the popular distributions (and getting them in their respective repositories) would increase the project's exposure.. as would getting it in those autoinstaller scripts (fantastico, hsphere, etc)... so long as installer-applied updates don't bork a site.

Hello,
a cool way to have it packaged in a reliable Linux environment even for Windoze users is building a virtual appliance for people with enough RAM, as the VM player is free.

i figure linux users who are serious about the platform either already know how to set the required stuff up, already have done so, or are eager to learn how to do it on their own... those who don't fit into any of those and use linux probably have a windows system as their primary pc anyway.
nice idea though... but the sizes of the downloads it would require takes it beyond what i was going for.. 'quick and easy'. (just the player for windows, v2.0.2, weighs in at 175mb).

kermit, I mean a Linux virtual appliance "for Windoze users" : they run a reliable server environnement without knowing it is Linux. It is "just another Windoze app", the free Windoze VM player.

i know what they are, but it's also still *linux*, and will require some degree of linux knowledge to utilize.. plus, consider how the 'typical' windows user is gonna get files to & from the 'server' -- ftp would be the easiest (for those that even know what that is) -- but still not as easy as just opening up an explorer window and copying files.Pierre M. wrote: kermit, I mean a Linux virtual appliance "for Windoze users" : they run a reliable server environnement without knowing it is Linux. Re: ready-made windows test server with cmsms 1.2.2 preinstalled.
I agree with kermit on this one..... though a vmware virtual machine pre-configured and setup with CMS Made simple would be ultra useful for those of us that know vmware, and have linux knowledge.... if the masses were to use it we would end up having to teach them linux.
Kermit's solution is the best, even though there will still have to be some support (php.ini stuff, yada yada yada). it's nowhere near what we would have to support for a vmware image.

Re: ready-made windows test server with cmsms 1.2.2 preinstalled.
Hey Kermit,
Nice work!
Yes, I can setup cmsms with WAMP/XAMPP or Uniserver myself as well. However, it is handy to do a 17.5 MB dowload and just run the setup knowing everything you need will be included for testing or trying things out with
Fact is, sometimes it is handy to be able to show a client an offline version of a website, which you know works the way you want it to for certain, and which is not dependent on the availability, or not, of thier Internet connection!
I've noticed people on the cmsms forums can be a bit 'grumpy' with peoples efforts and questions at times. But, it should be remembered that the user base for cmsms is growing and every user will have slightly varying knowledge levels and needs, and I think it would be good to remember this before you hit the 'post' button, as what you say cannot really be unsaid!!
One thing that I think makes successful and long living OSS projects is user forums where people are not denigrated and where their efforts are acknowledged even though they may not appeal to the 'super users' category of contributors.
Once again, well done kermit and good idea. I hope you will keep this upgraded with each stable release of cmsms, as it is very useful to some, and I think it would be a really easy way to allow new users who want to test cmsms for their own use to do so with minimal knowledge, effort and interference with their current systems setup! Just tell them in an obvious location where to get it!
BTW, According to it's developers, Uniserver is meant to be reliable enough to use for hosting a live site ... or I suspect, at least an intranet for internal use ... may appeal to some!

We get questions like 'how do i create a database', and 'how do I center a div', 'what is safe mode', or even posts about error messages like 'file not found' (I don't think that there are any simpler error messages than that). which are completely unspecific to CMS made simple and off topic, and yet some of these people get hostile when we try to correct them, or angry when we don't answer.
I have no problems answering a well thought out, well researched, well worded post that is related specifically to cms made simple. and have no problems dealing with peoples lack of experience here, or there.... neither does our support team. None of us know everything about everything.
We have to do google searches or read books and spend hours reading, researching and experimenting to answer our questions, .... I expect nothing more from the users.

Re: ready-made windows test server with cmsms 1.2.2 preinstalled.
unfortunately that is something i cannot guarantee at this time.ameagher wrote:

although it is not terribly difficult to do. i spent more time screwing around with winrar settings, creating the archive and then testing the results; than i did setting up the server and cmsms.
i would not recommend exposing a package like this to the internet -- if you know what you are doing and can ensure things are configured properly for a live site; then don't waste your time mukking around with this and set up a proper linux web server to start with.ameagher wrote:
