I have recently uploaded all files to a remote server and followed all the installation steps upto the view installation step. At which, i get a blank screen - i have amended the htaccess.txt file but i have no idea how to check the error log as instructed in the troubleshooting guide.
Any ideas on what could be causing this

Welcome. Thank you to have read the documentation, install procedure and even troubleshooting guide.
But there are several installation procedures, several ways to amend a file, several steps, several messages... and we are not in front of your screen.
Please describe with more details your context and your problem : all your actions, all the warnings seen...
But if you don't know how to look for the error log, I'm afraid you are in trouble.
Usual questions : hosting, OS, versionS, settings, logS, choices, actions, warnings...
