For a simple low-cost shopping cart I recommend www.mals-e.com.  It is either free or $8 per month, depending on if you need a real-time payment gateway or want to remove the mals-e logo from the bottom. 

I like it because it handles the secure storage of credit card numbers.  All it takes to use it is a little html, which could be put into your own user-defined tag: {malcart cartid=12345 item=stockno1 price=12.99}  That could be the "buy" button.  a customer can pay be credit card, check, or many more, including paypal and more.  The client (the merchant) must have his own merchant credit card account with his bank.  Getting a merchant account (to accept credit card payments) requires some paper work, but it has to be done regardless of which shopping cart you build or use. 

As it stands Mals has no database of items, which is why it is suitable for smaller stores.  But this is where a new module for CMSMS could make a big difference, we could maintain the inventory database in CMSMS and let mals-e keep track of the orders and credit card numbers on their secure servers.

Other people have mentioned mals-e in this forum, so do a search.  And since it is free, just go ahead and try it.

Some one told me that it (esshop) does not actually work with paypal.  I see an option to enter my paypal info, does it work?

ok, I just tested it.  It does give me a paypal button at the end.  Are they planning on adding a authorize.net or google checkout to it as well?

Esshop based on a ecommerce shop named Shop-script free

There are some commercial versions too (Shop-script PRO and PREMIUM) - maybe they can included on a similar way to cmsms ...

Esshop is not very well written, at least in keeping some sort of conformity with the standard module writing of CMSMS.  Its' very clunky.  It's a mess trying to find anything in that code to customize it -- like creating attributes for products.  I don't need an out of the box module, just something that is extendable.

I've given up and am writing my own, but in the meantime I'm going to have to move my customer's website to Joomla, because I'll never finish in the time they'd like me to have it done.  I've got categories written and products about finished .  I love CMSMS, unfortunately I'll have to hack around Joomla as they have a really nice shopping cart module called VirtueMart.

Hopefully the 3 modules in production now -- shop made simple, cart made simple, and payment made simple find legs.

A HUGE gap will be filled once there is a decent system in place.
