Backup mechanism in CORE, both File and DB

Post by RonnyK »

As all upgrade explanations start with the saying to make good backups, I think such a mechanism should be available in the Core, by default.

I strongly agree.

In my opinion a simple core database backup (like the now obsolete Database Backup module) is the only major shortfall in functionality that the CMSMS core has. Like RonnyK points out, CMS is built on data . . . one of the first features a CMS solution should provide is the means to protect and move that data. And in line with the unique value that CMSMS offers, there should be a simple, intuitive solution that even non-technical users can understand.

I turn over CMSMS sites to non-technical content managers all the time . . . the first instruction I give them is before making any significant content changes to their site, to hit the database backup button.

So, I'm dependent upon the Database Backup module for reducing my admin overhead, quickly installing and moving my sites. Since v1.1 it no longer works so I'm stuck using 1.0.8.

I'm waiting for 2.0 hoping that there will be a standard, easy to use, backup feature or it will be available as a stable module. Does anyone know if such a feature is planned for 2.0 of is this just wishful thinking?

I agree with RonnyK.
It is a pity that we have make a sidestep towards phpMyAdmin and perform somesort of backup overthere or follow other steps.
I take it that when a backup mechanism will be prepared, a restore mechanism (select tables even?) will be prepared at the same time.

RonnyK as you know, there are multiple types of backup: backup all, selective, only changed tables etc. Would you like to see various types to be part of the backup/restore mechanism (so db manager makes selection on which backup will be done)?

@casidougal,
did you try the mySQLdump module in later releases?

@ duketown,
I normally do a full, as the sites arent that big, but I could imagine that different types is a good thing to have for others with bigger sites or more critical sites. Sending the backup could be an option as well.

There exists a module named MassMover, which could do that

http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/projects/massmover/

Not sure if it will work with current version. Only available in SVN ...

Cyberman,

for moving sites, Calguy1000 just released SitePusher.

I was talking about generic backup/restore functionality for both files and DB. So like the modules FileBackup and the module mySQLdump.

Yes, I saw SitePusher - but if I'm right it's only for moving to server via ftp, not for backup ::)

On my servers I get mysqldump not to work - so I'm using mysqldumper :)

http://www.mysqldumper.de/en/

But a all in one solution (like MassMover) would be better ...

Ah, OK,

reading the text of MassMover a little better, I understand the meaning. It should indeed, backup all and transfer it somewhere, but as viewsvn is not working I cant see the files. Also the project is registered jan-2006, but still didnt release any files.

Indeed a single solution is preferred (at least by me), and when in the core, it will (require) to work on all releases. As now like many mention, DBbackup doesnt work after 1.1 and many have issues with mySQLdump. So no reliable module is available for this.....

Yes, this is what I used with earlier versions of CMSMS, at some upgrade along the way it stopped working for me, so I switched to the database backup module which stopped working after v1.0.8.

I have to say I'm encouraged to see others with an interest in this topic.  Does anyone have insight on the question in my earlier post?

I'm not that familiar with the protocol to make a formal suggestion to the development team for 2.0 . . . can anyone point me in the right direction?

Go to the project page in CMSms Forge and log in. Then you will found there a link for feature requests ...

OK Ronny, here comes a "release", only for you  ;D.

Rename it to .zip ...

Thanks for posting, I changed it to a .zip but when I try to extract it says the file is corrupted ...

It seams forum destroys my attachment. So I'm going another way.

Have "released" a MassMover zip archive as patch
