[SOLVED] Pretty URLs with mod_rewrite: Check your FTP transfer setting!

For all 'non-techies' who have problems making the pretty URLs with mod_rewrite work:

1) This documented process works:

2) What is NOT stressed at all (including all related-forum topics but one) is that after editing the .htaccess file, make sure to check your FTP settings to transfer the file as Encoding: ASCII. (It took me a few hours to figure out that one!)
