I have been working on an intranet CMS for the company I work for, for the last two years. Much of it is coded from hand with no nice admin panels or tools for adding content.
I've been using CMSMS for a few weeks now on a home project and like what I see, however they're are a few things which I think would make the menus much more powerful.
1. Link between users, permissions and menus. If there is already a mechanism for this I didn't see it, but it would be nice for menus to be hideable from certain users...ie. non-members.
2. AJAX driven menu system, where by menus are re-drawn as new users log in and out without re-rendering the whole page. This could also apply to other modules, where they refresh if neccessary based on user permissions. Also content area should refresh as menus are selected, without re-rendering the rest of the page.
3. The ability to name a target area on the page for content would be nice, so a menu selection could update an area rather than reload the entire page.
4. Integration SMF. SMF has a mod which allows you to add as many additional fields as you like, I'm thinking it wouldn't be to difficult to use the SMF users table with this mod in place of the CMSMS users table.
There are some really neat features in CMSMS, I'd llike to help out if possible but am unsure how to get involved.

Re: Menu ideas
Sy,
as for number one, there is the functionality FrontEndUsers in combination with CustomContent. This gives you the opportunity to show different menus to different groups.
For the other topics. You might want to check the list of CMSMS 2.0. There is quite some change coming. Look in the announcement area for the included features.
