customizing username and password fields

Hi forum

Can any of you kind people give me some advice on customizing the username and password fields for the PunBB module?
What i have been trying to do is change the way the fields are displayed by having the box's inline instead of on top of each other
and move the username and password text to be displayed inside the dialog box's. I'm using the Tag to display the box'x in my home page.

Oh and any advice on making the background colour on my main content box extend down to my footer?
