Has anyone used the cms or one of it's modules, like the newsletter or events calendar to send a text message to set numbers (probably stored in the database)? I'm thinking how useful it could be and haven't heard much about it.

Hmm, not sure what you want but maybe FormBuilder can help 
... it has the possibility too to save form values in database.
