Subnav trouble using simple_navigation.tpl

I'm new to CMS made simple and I really like it so far.  I've figured out how to use the templates and have only one outstanding problem that is driving me insane!

I have horizontal top nav (main parent nav), and vertical sub-nav (children).  What I want to do with the vertical sub-nav, is display the parent link (same link in the horiz top nav) with the sub nav links in the same style as the sub nav.  So for example if you have "About Us" as a top parent nav item, when you click on that I want to display subnav links like this:

- About Us (link to the main parent page)
- Our History (sub page)
- Locations (sub page)
etc...

I figured out how to show ALL the parent links for all first level nav, but I only want to display the parent & child nav for that specific section.
